Dear colleagues and friends,
News is received from Dr. Bruce Walter about the sad loss of Lloyd Baum, who passed away yesterday afternoon at
the age of 88. Lloyd had been a pioneer in the early Loma Linda University School of Dentistry and was a
gifted teacher and innovator. It is difficult to say if we as students learned more dentistry from anyone
else but him, especially in the area of restorative dentistry. Of his numerous patented dental inventions,
Goldent/E-Z Gold dental filling material is still being made. He went to Stony Brook, NY early in the 1970s
to aid in the beginning of a new dental clinic there. Then he returned to Loma Linda and developed our
school's International Dental Program. Lloyd was actively concerned that those in other countries should
learn good dentistry and be able to serve their own people by improved standards. Along this line he was
instrumental in the development of Sir Run Run Shaw clnic in China. And the people of Mexico honor him for
starting and organizing the successful new dental school at the University of Montemorelos. He is survived by
his wife Alma, daughter Marti, and son Brad, who are both physicians. Announcement about a memorial service
is yet to be made.
Sincerely,
Clyde Roggenkamp
